Veranos de la Villa - Madrid's Summer Festival

I must apologise to regular visitors to this blog for not having written an article for a while but I have been quite busy with work and developing my other website - Marketing Tom. Because of that I failed to write up about one of the big events in Madrid's calendar, the Veranos de la Villa festival. This festival runs from the 2nd July until the 26th August and offers visitors and Madrileños the ability to see around 100 shows covering music, theatre, dance, circus events and zarzuela in some of the most important venues around the city. The Sabatini gardens (next to Palacio Real), Conde Duque, Plaza Mayor, Centro Cultural de la Villa and Teatro Español are just some of those locations.

Here's a brief selection of singers who will perform - Liza Minelli, Laurie Anderson, Carlos Núñez, Andy & Lucas, David de María, Antonio Vega, Patricia Kraus and Mercedes Ferrer, Diego el Cigala, Yossou N’ Dour. Flamenco artists include: José Mercé, Carmen Linares, José Menese, Rafaela Carrasco, Manuel Molina, La Negra and Esperanza Fernández. The Patio Conde Duque will host the Boston Ballet and the Legend Lin Dance Theatre and Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is performed by the New York Harlem Theatre.

Classsic Spanish plays like Calderón de la Barca's Casa con dos puertas mala es de guardar and Shakespeare's Cymbelline will be performed in the Jardines de Galileo.

All in all, there's something for everyone.

For more (much more) information, take a look at the Veranos de la Villa microsite from EsMadrid.

Madrid Flamenco Recommendations from the Independent

The Independent newspaper yesterday published an interesting article by Chris Sullivan, where he explores Madrid's Flamenco scene. He was even lucky enough to meet up with Joaquín Cortés, Spain's most famous flamenco dancer - well, it looks like this opportunity to meet him was the main reason he went to Madrid. He recounts his experience of going to places like El Arco de Cuchilleros, the famous Café de Chinitas and the Corral de la Moreria and being mildly disappointed - his words, not mine!

Still in search of what he calls true flamenco he ended up going to Cardomomo, where Joaquín Cortés-like people performed and watched the spectacle. The next night he actually met Joaquín Cortés at Casa Patas, where he watched the evening's show. Cortés told him that, "Madrid is where some of the best flamenco is found in Spain." Chris Sullivan finally ended up going to a place, recommended by Cortes, called Candela "an old rough bar that looked just like the other old rough bars in Lavapies" and where he finally found what he had been looking for.

This article certainly seems to have dug under the surface and recommends some of the less-touristy flamenco options available in Madrid.

More information can be found on the Independent -  Last dance saloon: Step into Madrid's authentic flamenco scene.

On a Summer's Day It Has To Be Días de Verano

Driving to work this morning, with the sun shining brightly, there was only one song that I fancied playing: Amaral's Días de Verano (or Summer Days). I know the song is not from this year but who cares - my kids and wife love it! Click the YouTube video below to enjoy!

I Love Paris (in Madrid!)

Iloveparis_the_definitive_version_2 On the 13th, 14th and 15th April, 2007 the Madrid Players are putting on a show called I Love Paris Spring Revue. According to their blog, I Love Paris:

is a tribute to the music of the City of Lights: by the American composers who fell under her spell, and the French artistes who have served as her ambassadors to the world. From Irving Berlin to Jacques Brel, from Cole Porter to Edith Piaf, The Madrid Players’ newest musical revue will feature some of the best songs of Broadway and the Grands Boulevards, all with that certain je ne sais quoi of Parisian flair!

The Madrid Players are an amateur group, comprising some 60 people, which was fouunded thirty years ago. One third of the proceeds of the show will go to Alanda, an NGO for children with autism spectrum disorders. For more information an ticket details, visit the Madrid Players website.

Rolling Stones to Announce Tour Dates

If you're a Rolling Stones fan, you may want to listen out for a press conference that they will give on Thursday, 22nd March. It has been rumoured that they will play the Estadio Vicente Calderón, Madrid on the 28th June, 2007. Watch out for more news tomorrow.

**UPDATE**
The Rolling Stones have confirmed that they will play Madrid's Vicente Calderón on the 28th June, 2007.

December Suggestions from Metrópoli

150planes

Metrópoli has a really good guide to what you can do in Madrid this December - it is in Spanish, though. They have come up with 150 suggestions for what you can do in the coming weeks - eat, drink, be merry and much more. Interestingly, they have broken them down into 15 categories - based on different types of personality. These range from the sportsman (woman), the art lover, the over 65's, under 18's, the shopaholics, singles, and a good few more. There are some really cool suggestions here - there is even a category for those who think they're cool!!

Christmas Programme for Madrid

If you'd like an "exhaustive" programme of activities on in Madrid this Christmas, download [pdf] the esMadrid magazine. Be aware this is quite a "beefy" 8MB pdf!!

Madrid at Christmas

Pereza to Play Nuevo Teatro Alcalá in November

Pereza1_1 One of Madrid's hottest bands - and definitely one of my favourites - has announced 3 dates for concerts in Madrid's Nuevo Teatro Alcalá. Pereza will play on the 20th, 21st and 22nd November and tickets can be bought from Fnac, Carrefour (Supermarket) and Tick Tack Ticket - I'm sure tickets will go very quickly.

Amaral and Keane Play Las Ventas

Amaral_1

This is very short notice but if you're in Madrid tonight (15th June, 2006) you really should consider going to see, what should be, a great concert in Las Ventas (the bullring). My favourite Spanish band Amaral (of the moment) will be playing alongside Keane as part of MTV day. Tickets only cost 20 Euros and can be bought at FNAC (Metro Callao) or at the box office. If you can't go, take some time to listen to their music and watch their videos on their website.

Franz Ferdinand Signs Up For MetroRock

Metrorock

On the 23rd and 25th June, 2006 Madrid hosts its own rock/pop festival, MetroRock. Artists from both Spain and internationally will converge on Parque Juan Carlos and perform on their two stages. The headline band this year will be Franz Ferdinand, who just signed up to perform.

Metrorock2_1 Other artists include: Paul Weller, The Charlatans, Gecko Turner, Macao, Sexy Sadie, 12Twelve, Chambao, Lori Mayers, Bersuit, and many more. Last year over 30,000 people turned up to enjoy the show.  In addition, there will also be a clubbing area with DJ’s like Karl Bartos (Kraftwerk), Jaumëtic, Damian Schwartz, Iñaqui Marín, Tadeo.

El Barberillo de Lavapiés at the Teatro de la Zarzuela

Zarzuela

According to Wikipedia Zarzuela:

"..is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre, which alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating dances."

Indeed, some of Spain's most important opera singers, like Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe, have all done Zarzuela. Domingo will actually be playing a lead role this summer in a zarzuela production in Madrid.

The Barberillo de Lavapiés, composed by Barbieri, first premiered in 1874 and is often referred to as the greatest zarzuela grande. I have been to a number of zarzuelas over the years and would recommend them to anyone. They have a true Spanish/Madrid feel to them and are performed to such a high standard - you never know if you'll be listening to the next José Carreras, Placido Domingo or Alfredo Kraus. By the way if you don't understand Spanish very well, it's well worth getting the score beforehand.

El Barberillo de Lavapiés is performed by the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid and the choir of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, accompanied by the voices of Beatriz Lanza, Amparo Navarro, Carmen González, Marco Moncloa, Luis Álvarez and Julio Morales. It will be at the Teatro de la Zarzuela until the 10th March.

Timetable
Wednesday-Saturday: 8 p.m.
Sundays: 6 p.m.

Madrid Jazz Festival 2005

Jazz_festival_20052

For the past 3 to 4 weeks I have seen a number of visitors arriving to this site looking for the Madrid Jazz Festival 2005. Unfortunately, they have had to content themselves with details of last year's event. Well, as is often the case, the powers that be in Madrid have decided to release online details of this year's event at the very last minute.

The XXII Madrid Jazz Festival will start on November 1st, 2005 and will feature an array of artists from around the world. It will conclude on the 1st December, 2005. This year it looks like around a third of all acts will be Flamenco Jazz-related. The festival will kick off with a concert by Paquito D'Rivera - '50 Años y 300 noches' - at the Centro Cultural de la Villa, the primary venue for most of the festival.

This year 2 concerts will take place with musicians from New Orleans, scene of so much devastation a couple of months ago. Some of the highlights of the festival include:

  • Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans
  • Dave Holland Quintet / Javier Vercher Cuarteto
  • Charlie Haden´s Liberation Music Orchestra / Dennis Rollins
  • Joe Zawinul Project & Wdr Big Band Köln
  • Diego Amador Trío
  • Roy Haynes
  • María Schneider Jazz Orchestra
  • Iré Habana : José María Vitier Cuarteto / SedaJazz
  • Guillermo McGill Quartet & David Liebman
  • Bob Sands Big Band & Laika Fatien
  • Habana Report / Joshua Edelman

And many, many more. For a full listing of shows, events and artists, you will need to check out the Esmadrid Jazz Festival Website

It is not just the large venues that will host Jazz artists but also the popular Jazz clubs, like Café  Central, Bar Café Clamores Jazz, Sala Barco and Rincon del Arte Nuevo.

In addition, you will find Jazz films like Piano Blues by Clint Eastwood and When We Were Kings by Leon Gast. There are two masterclasses and even Jazz concerts for kids.

For a full listing of show and events, you will need to check out the Esmadrid Jazz Festival Website

The website also has a list of venues, with accompanying prices and addresses.

Public Transport Fiesta

MadridsincochesThe City Council of Madrid along with EMT (bus) and Metro Madrid will be holding, for the third year running, a 'public transport' fiesta - the website is called Madrid Sin Coches (Madrid Without Cars). The idea of the fiesta is to create more awarenesss of public transport and to use personal vehicles in a more rational way in the city centre - very admirable! As part of this celebration a FREE concert will be held in the evening, featuring popular Spanish band Pereza singer Fran Perea and Cuban Rap band Orishas. The concert will be held in the Paseo de Camoens, which is a short walk from Moncloa Metro stop. In the morning there is a children's fiesta starting at 11.30 a.m.

I would certainly recommend you go along and listen to Pereza who are undoubtedly the Spanish Rock/Pop find of the year.

Flamenco in the Metro

From the 12th to the 16th September, the metro station of Nuevos Ministerios will be putting on a flamenco show every single evening at 10 p.m. Among the guests who will be taking part are: Manuela Carrasco (flamenco dancer), El Lebrijano (flamenco singer), Antonio El Pipa (flamenco dancer), Falete (flamenco signer) and Tomatito (flamenco guitarist). Entry is free to these events but it would probably be advisable to get there quite early.

La Otra Mirada del Flamenco - Flamenco Festival

TeatropradilloThe flamenco festival La Otra Mirada del Flamenco will this year celebrate its tenth anniversary at the Teatro Pradillo. It has supported comtemporary flamenco artists and projects over the decade and says itself that some of the productions have been quite risky and have broken new ground. For the tenth anniversary they have put together a line up of both young and well-known artists such as Belén Maya and Rafaela Carrasco, Angel Rojas, Manuel Liñán and Silvia Marín.

The press information actually says that La Otra Mirada del Flamenco will give international visitors to Madrid an alternative flamenco programme of great quality in a small format to the purely commercial offerings that can be found.

Ticket Prices: 12 Euros can be bought at the theatre
Address: C/ Pradillo, 12
Metro: Concha Espina (Exit Plaza Cataluña)

Madrid's Cultural Summer Programme

Veranos2Throughout July and right up to August 14th, the Madrid City Council puts on its summer entertainment programme, called Veranos de la Villa, which sees events taking place both indoors and outdoors and cuts across the cultural spectrum. It is a wonderful opportunity to see Spanish culture at its best and the programme includes flamenco, dance, music, zarzuela, theatre and much more. Here are some examples of what's on offer:

  • Soloists from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden will sing in the Plaza de Oriente (in front  of the Royal Palace).
  • Flamenco dance companies and singers like Compañia Manuela Carrasco, La Tana (Montse Cortés), Belén Maya, Carmen Linares and El Cigala will also play the Sabatini Gardens
  • Richard III will be performed by the Centro Drámatico Galego
  • Miguel Riós, Roberta Flack, Robert Cray and Antonio Vega will play the Patio Central de Conde Duque

This is just a small selection of what's going on over this time. I would suggest you take a look at the  Veranos de la Villa site - it is in Spanish but you should be able to find your way around. Tip: Actividades means activities/events and Espacios, venues. Many of the events are free, though there is a small charge for indoor venues.

Pereza: Madrid's Top Rock Band

Pereza_1Whilst in FNAC a few weeks ago I noticed a couple of Spanish lads buying a good few copies of the same CD. The band in question was called Pereza and the album - Animales - was the latest release from the band. The next time I went in to FNAC I listened to the album and was immediately hooked. I have been playing the album non-stop ever since - they are probably the most exciting Spanish rock band I've heard in many a year.

Pereza are a band from the North of Madrid who have been playing together since the end of the 1990's and 'Animales' is now their third album. The first song they released off the album was 'Princesas' and you can listen to it and others on the Pereza website.

The band will be playing at the Palacio de Deportes in Madrid on the 11th June and I would certainly recommend trying to get along to see them.

Hard to think that this band formed in 1978.

Flamenco-World.com opens its first shop

Tienda3 For over 8 years Flamenco-World.com has had a web presence and has grown into on of the major flamenco web sites in the world. Now, as a result of demand from its readers/customers, it has opened its first shop in Madrid. The shop is located in Madrid's well-known c/Huertas and has two rooms which display a variety of flamenco-related products, from CD's and DVD's to books, shoes, postcards, guitars, shawls, box drums and accessories. Their intention is the following:

“We want to cater to the demanding enthusiast, but also to the tourist and the curious seeking a place representative of that part of Spanish culture which is flamenco, presented enticingly and seriously, as heritage of the people and not just of sybarites”.

Walking along c/Huertas, which is one of the main centre's of Madrid's nightlife, a couple of weeks back I couldn't help but see the shop front in daytime with its deep red colours - this is quite strange as the bars & restaurants of this famous nightspot tend to be invisible in daytime!

Corral de la Morería - Flamenco Shows

flamencoThe Corral de la Morería is often billed as one of the best flamenco shows in the world - if the list of famous personalities who have visited it are anything to go by, they certainly are. George Bush, Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, Tom Jones, Samuel Jackson, Hugh Grant and Mariah carey have alll visited this famous place. Since its inauguration in 1956 it has put on shows with all the major flamenco artists like Antonio Gades, Lucero Tena and Pastora Imperio.
